TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is an image format primarily used for scans, in professional image editing and, occasionally, in professional printing. TIFF files support lossless compression, multiple layers and multiple PAGES. They also support various colour spaces such as CMYK (important for printing). This makes TIFF files very flexible, but unfortunately also cumbersome. TIFF files are often large and can be tricky to handle. For a long time, TIFF was the standard format for scans, but nowadays PDF is increasingly being used for this purpose too.

Why use PNG as the target format?

PNG also offers lossless compression, but is purely a screen format and significantly more compact than TIFF. Transparency is supported, and colour depth of up to 16 bits per channel is possible. For typical use cases, such as sending a scanned document by email, embedding an image on a website or inserting it into a presentation, PNG is often the better choice. Image quality is fully preserved, as both formats are lossless. For particularly small files, a (lossy) conversion from TIFF to JPG is also possible.
